Governor El-Rufai Orders Closure of Kaduna Schools Over Rising Abduction

Nasir el-Rufai, the Kaduna State Governor, has ordered the immediate closure of 13 schools that are vulnerable to bandits’ attacks.

He made the decision following the recent attack on the Bethel Baptist school in Chikun Local Government Area of the state.

The marauding raiders had stormed the school, in the early hours of Monday, to abduct over 100 students, killing two others.

According Channels TV, Umma Ahmed, the Director-General of Quality Assurance Authority in the state’s Ministry of Education, has directed proprietors of the identified schools to shut down with immediate effect.

“You are hereby advised to adhere to the contents of this letter as appropriate sanctions shall be meted out to schools that are found wanting for non-compliance, please,” Ahmad said.

The Director listed the names of the affected schools to include Faith Academy, along Kachia Road adjacent to Jakaranda; Deeper Life Academy, Maraban Rido; ECWA Secondary school, Ungwar Maje; and Bethel Baptist High School, Damishi.

Others are St. Peters Minor Seminary, Katari; Prelude Secondary School, Kujama; Ibiso Secondary School, Tashar Iche; Tulip International (Boys) School and Tulip international (Girls) School and among others.

El-Rufai was recently under fire on social media after a report exposed how he secretly withdrew his son from a public primary school over fear of attack by bandits.

Responding to critics, he said his son had been targeted by bandits because of his controversial stand against the payment of ransom.

The recurring mass abduction of schoolchildren has spread fears, causing the shutdown of over 3000 disadvantaged schools in the northwest and northcentral states.
