The President Muhammadu Buhari led-Federal Government has released N6.25billion for the establishment of cattle ranches in local councils affected by banditry in Katsina State.
This is coming amidst the country’s rising foreign debts and ailing economy; also, the Nigerian university lecturers earlier today extended the six months’ industrial action they embarked since February 14, to force the government to implement the FG/ASUU 2009 Agreement which stipulated how the nation’s university education should be funded.
However, the Buhari-led government had told the union that the government lacked the fund to implement the agreement.
Meanwhile, the Katsina State Deputy Governor, Mannir Yakubu, on Monday announced that the federal government had released the funds to the state to develop cattle ranches, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
Yakubu, also Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, spoke at the Ranch Stakeholders Development Meeting in Katsina.
Local government areas where the grazing reserves would be established are Jibia, Batsari, Dutsinma, Safana, Danmusa, Kankara, Faskari, Sabuwa and Dandume.
Part of the funds released would be used to construct schools, health centres and veterinary clinics in the villages hosting the reserves.
Yakubu assured that the federal and the state governments were determined to ensure peace in places by cattle rustling, kidnapping and other criminalities.
“We are soliciting for the support and cooperation of the affected communities to provide suitable sites for the execution of these projects,” Yakubu said.
