Funke Akindele’s ‘behind The Scenes’ Hits ₦2.1 Billion Box Office

The Federal Government has praised Nollywood actress, producer and filmmaker Funke Akindele following the record-breaking performance of her latest movie, Behind the Scenes, at the Nigerian box office.

The commendation came through the National Orientation Agency (NOA), which described the feat as a major boost for Nigeria’s creative industry and a clear sign of Nollywood’s growing global influence. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Behind the Scenes recently crossed the ₦2.1 billion mark in ticket sales, officially becoming the first Nollywood film to surpass ₦2 billion at the domestic box office.

Beyond Nigeria, the movie has also recorded impressive international earnings, grossing over $111,000 in Canada and approximately $190,000 across North America, further cementing its global appeal.

Reacting to the milestone, the NOA celebrated Akindele’s achievement, noting that the film resonated strongly with audiences both at home and abroad.

“From Lagos to Toronto, from cinemas in Abuja to theatres overseas — this movie had everyone locked in,” the agency stated.

The agency also revealed that Funke Akindele has now become the first filmmaker to top the African box office for three consecutive years, an achievement that places her among the most successful filmmakers on the continent.

Released in 2025, Behind the Scenes has dominated both local and international markets, reinforcing the global relevance of Nigerian stories and the increasing demand for African cinema worldwide.

Industry observers say the film’s strong reception highlights Nollywood’s ability to attract diverse audiences and compete on the global cinematic stage.

Widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s most influential figures, Funke Akindele has continued to redefine success in the Nigerian film industry through innovative storytelling, strong production values and audience-driven narratives.

The overwhelming success of Behind the Scenes is being described as a proud moment for Nigeria’s cultural and creative sectors, with many seeing it as proof that Nollywood is firmly establishing itself as a global force.

The Federal Government’s endorsement follows widespread praise from cinema-goers and critics, further solidifying Akindele’s reputation as one of Africa’s most successful and consistent filmmakers.
