Residents and business owners in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, as well as the surrounding areas, have suffered greatly due to the ongoing flooding along Atiku Abubakar Way.
A correspondent in Uyo bemoaned the destruction of their means of subsistence by the water.
They pleaded with the State Governor, Pst. Umo Eno, to protect them from the flooding threat.
Mr Idara , an automobile engineer, bemoaned that he had not been able to work from his workshop for almost three days since the entire area had been inundated by flood.
Idara revealed that one of his apprentices had been hurt and had been taken to the hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment, and lamented the financial loss he always experiences whenever his shop floods.
“I am a professional automotive electrician,” he began. I am one among the flood victims, and it significantly damaged me.
“Despite losing certain customers, we are still able to exist. As you can see, the rain completely ruined everything in my store, even the tools we had purchased from Lagos for the job. One of my boys fell into the water and was hurt; the hospital has been treating him.
For the past 7 years, we have resided here. It wasn’t like this before. To avoid having their waste dumped here, I’m pleading with the locals and the government to find another place to dispose of it.
Poor waste management is to blame for the flooding because when waste is dumped, it clogs drains and makes it impossible for water to flow freely. I beg our governor, Mr Victor, to see what he can do to assist us in this situation.
We really want to ask the government for assistance in opening the gutters and tunnels so that water can flow through easily because there are many commercial centers here. Nobody will venture outside if it rains for two days, he lamented.
