Fear of Total Darkness As Nigeria’s National Grid Collapses Again

Nigerians have again been thrown into darkness as the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) on Thursday announced another national grid collapse.

The AEDC, while confirming the development to its customers through its social media handles, said the national grid collapsed at about 4:28pm.

In the notice, the power distribution company said, “Dear valued customers, please be informed that the current power outage is due to a system failure from the national grid. The system collapsed at about 16:28 hours today 28 March 2024, causing the outage currently being experienced across our franchise area.

“We appeal for your understanding as all stakeholders are working hard to restore normal supply.”

Similarly, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company in a public notice said, “Dear valued customer, kindly be informed there was a system collapse at 16:28hrs which has resulted in a loss of power supply across our network.

“We are currently working with our partners as we hope for speedy restoration of the grid. We will keep you updated as soon as the power supply is restored. Kindly bear with us.”

SaharaReporters in February reported how Nigerians across the country were thrown into darkness as the national power grid managed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) recorded its first collapse in 2024.

In September 2023, the TCN reported a total of 46 grid collapses in the country between 2017 and 2022.

In 2017 and 2018, there were 15 and 12 grid collapses respectively.

There were nine grid collapses in 2019, four in 2020 and two in 2021. In 2022, there were four grid collapses.
