FCE Akoka Students Protest As School Management Installs CCTV in Female Hostels

The students of Federal college of education, Akoka , Lagos have stage a protest in the school premises as  female students have accused the management of the school of installing CCTV in their hostels.

The protest broke out early morning on Friday after the School dean was found at the students hostels driving away students at midnight over issues that he saw from the CCTV camera.

According to some of the student the CCTV camera in Installed almost everywhere in the female hostel thereby denying them of personal privacy.

Some of female students have also revealed that the school management and lecturers have been watching their nakedness since after the installation of the camera , as they claim their lectures have said it to their faces before.

A female student and an Exco of the Student Union Government Latifat Abiodun narrated what she believed caused the protest.

“The Dean sent some students out of the hostel because he saw them on CCTV camera and he came around 12am to chase the students out of the hotel” She said.

Also speaking at the protest the electoral Chairman of the students union election, Morakinyo Adewunmi Oluwafemi said that the dean of the school invades the female hostels at night which to him is improper.

 

“We are in a school that if students agitate, the lecturers will threaten the students with failure in exams, the dean invades the students female hostel at mid night and we can’t even say what he is going there to do at that time.

Here in Federal college of education, Akoka we don’t have a conducive environment to study, the Sewage pipes are all broken, there is no compliance with the federal government rule of social distancing in the school amid covid-19.

The hostels houses over 7,000 students which is far beyond the capacity of the facility.” He said

The General Sectary of the Student Union Government of the School, Ibrahim Olubade said that it is unnecessary for the School management to install CCTV camera in Female Hostels while there are no other basic facilities in the school to help students with study.

“We don’t have a school portal in the institute to check students information, yet  the management installs a CCTV camera in female students hotel , there are so many things to be done o help the students, we don’t have good toilets in the school, Most times to find bathing water around the school is difficult, the classes and hostel is over crowed and the management is not doing anything about.

We have in so many occasions’ written letters and complained but they don’t care”. He said

The school management declined comment on the issue as at the time of this report.
