Fresh concerns have emerged over growing insecurity along the Enugu-Abakaliki federal highway after a luxury bus conductor lost his life during a suspected armed robbery attack that left several passengers seriously injured.

The tragic incident, which occurred in the early hours of June 13, has intensified fears among motorists and commercial transport operators who describe the highway as one of the most dangerous routes for night travel in southeastern Nigeria.

The latest attack reportedly took place at the Mezana axis of Onuogba Nike Community in Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Luxury Bus Crashes While Attempting to Escape Armed Robbers

According to transport industry sources, the luxury bus was travelling from Lagos to Abakaliki when it encountered a roadblock allegedly mounted by armed robbers operating along the highway.

Faced with what appeared to be an imminent attack, the driver reportedly attempted to reverse the vehicle and flee the scene.

Witnesses said the suspected robbers opened fire after realizing the bus was attempting to escape.

During the desperate effort to evade the attackers, the vehicle reportedly lost control and plunged into a deep ditch.

The driver survived the crash, but the conductor died at the scene, while numerous passengers suffered severe injuries and were rushed for medical attention.

Growing Security Crisis on Enugu-Abakaliki Federal Highway

The incident has renewed concerns about the deteriorating security situation along the Enugu-Abakaliki federal road, particularly on the stretch between Eke-Obinagu and Idodo, near the boundary separating Enugu and Ebonyi states.

Commercial drivers and transport operators say armed robbery attacks have become increasingly common during nighttime hours, making travel extremely risky.

A transport union leader, Omeje Stephen, described the highway as a danger zone once darkness falls.

According to him, commuters travelling between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. face constant threats from criminal gangs allegedly operating from communities located along the route.

Transport Union Alleges Criminals Monitor Security Movements

Speaking on the worsening security challenges, Stephen alleged that the attackers appear familiar with police deployment patterns and adjust their operations accordingly.

“The people carrying out these robberies must be residents of the communities living along the road and not outsiders,” he said.

“They know exactly when the security personnel leave their checkpoints.”

He further claimed that criminals often relocate their operations whenever security agencies establish checkpoints in certain locations.

“These days, when the police mount a checkpoint at Point A, the hoodlums move to Point B to rob. When the police occupy Points A and B, the criminals create a new front,” he said.

The union leader argued that mobile security patrols would be more effective than stationary checkpoints, which he claimed have failed to stop criminal activities on the highway.

Driver’s Relative Recounts Similar Attack

Stephen also recounted a recent attack involving his cousin, a truck driver, who was allegedly ambushed near Mile 17 along the same route.

According to him, armed robbers reportedly stole cash and mobile phones before shooting both the truck conductor and driver.

The account highlights growing fears among transport workers who depend on the highway for commercial activities and interstate travel.

Police Confirm Incident, Dispute Shooting Claims

The Enugu State Police Command confirmed the incident and acknowledged the death of the bus conductor.

However, police authorities disputed claims that the victim was killed by gunfire.

According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, preliminary investigations suggest the conductor died after becoming trapped beneath goods carried by the vehicle following the crash.

“Contrary to the allegations of shooting and murder, preliminary investigation reveals that on 13/06/2026 at about 4:00 a.m., a bus conveying goods fell into a deep gutter at Onuagba, along the Enugu–Abakaliki Road, while the driver allegedly attempted to evade suspected armed robbers,” Ndukwe stated.

He added that police officers responded quickly after receiving information about the incident and rescued the conductor before transporting him to a hospital.

Unfortunately, the victim was later confirmed dead by medical personnel.

“The conductor wasn’t shot dead as alleged. However, further investigation is ongoing to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident,” the police spokesperson said.

Commuters Warn Against Night Travel

Despite the police clarification, transport operators and frequent road users continue to express concern over safety on the highway.

Several commercial drivers have reportedly advised passengers and fellow motorists to avoid travelling along the Enugu-Abakaliki Road after 7 p.m. until security conditions improve.

Many stakeholders are now calling on security agencies to intensify patrols, dismantle criminal networks operating along the corridor, and restore confidence among commuters using one of the region’s major transportation routes.

Calls for Urgent Security Intervention

The latest tragedy has sparked renewed calls for stronger security measures on federal highways across Nigeria, particularly roads connecting major commercial and agricultural hubs.

Residents, transport unions, and road users are urging authorities to deploy intelligence-driven patrol teams, improve surveillance, and strengthen law enforcement presence along vulnerable sections of the Enugu-Abakaliki highway.

As investigations continue, the death of the luxury bus conductor has become another painful reminder of the security challenges confronting travellers on Nigerian roads.
