The Edo State Government briefly sealed an event venue, Mega Hub, after a concert where Nigerian rapper Eedris Abdulkareem criticised President Bola Tinubu.
The event, held on April 3 and titled “Mega Rave: A Night With The Legends,” featured multiple performers. During his set, Abdulkareem paused to address the audience, condemning the Tinubu administration over economic hardship and insecurity.
A video from the performance later surfaced online, showing the rapper referencing recent killings in Plateau State and questioning the government’s response. He also took aim at supporters of the ruling party, blaming leadership decisions for the country’s current challenges.
Venue sealed over ‘security concerns’
A few days after the show, officials of the Edo State Government sealed the Mega Hub premises. Images circulating online showed the entrance cordoned off, with markings indicating government action.
The move sparked speculation that the closure was connected to Abdulkareem’s remarks.
However, the state’s Commissioner for Information, Kassim Afegbua, clarified that the decision was based on security intelligence and not related to any criticism of the president.
He also confirmed that the facility has since been reopened, although he did not specify when the restriction was lifted.
Political backdrop
The development comes as political activities intensify ahead of future elections. Governor Monday Okpebholo, a member of the All Progressives Congress, has consistently declared support for President Tinubu.
The incident has continued to generate reactions, with many debating the balance between security measures and freedom of expression.
