Death Of Female Doctor Not Spiritual, Lagos Hospital Ignored Doctors’ Complaints About Faulty Elevator, Other Issues In 2022

Governor Sanwo-Olu’s wife had described the incident as a spiritual attack against the health sector in a viral video.

Against the ridiculous claim made by Ibijoke, the wife of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, that the death of a female medical doctor, Vwaere Diaso, in a faulty elevator at the General Hospital, Odan was “an arrow” that was “fired into the health family”, doctors in the hospital have released a written complaint in which they threatened to embark on strike over the faulty elevator and other numerous issues in 2022.

The doctors said they wrote to the management of the hospital about the faulty elevator and many other issues including unavailability of water in doctors’ quarters, and poor power supply in 2022 and the management promised to fix them but eventually, rather than fix the elevator and other issues they complained about, “they threatened to take our license or terminate our practice.”

SaharaReporters had reported that Diaso died in a faulty elevator which reportedly crashed from the 10th floor of the building to the ground floor two weeks before the completion of her housemanship at General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island.

Tens of House Officers at the hospital have protested against the death of Diaso,l.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State government said it had set up an inquiry team to investigate the elevator accident. However, Governor Sanwo-Olu’s wife had described the incident as a spiritual attack against the health sector in a viral video.

“An arrow has been fired into the health family. First of August is a day I will never forget,” she said. “The same day a helicopter crashed, the same day a lift dropped down. How? How? How?” she had said.

But the House Officers in a letter dated July 25, 2022, and addressed to the Consultant, Surgery Department of the hospital complained about the faulty elevator and called on the hospital to hold the elevator company accountable for repairing the recurrent issues on the elevator.

The doctors also complained about the lack of steady power supply; lack of water to carry out daily activities as a result of faulty pumping machines; financial and health implications of daily purchase of food; two hours of power supply per day by the generator; constant plague of rodents and cockroaches and inability to study, rest well and improve knowledge base from the unavailability of electricity to aid reading and power up gadgets.

They said in the letter, “These issues are hampering our effectiveness as house officers, reducing our morale and putting us on the brink of frustration. We understand the situation of the environment and economy and have been patient and understanding.

“The issues have been presented to the facility management company and also different levels of the medical guild for several months, however, we have been met with promises which have not been fulfilled. As a result of this persistent inaction, we have agreed as a group to embark on a one-day strike which will.”
