Court Sentences Two ‘EFCC’ Officials To Prison

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of two men who impersonated its officials in Kano State.

Truetells Nigeria reports that the convicts, Buhari Abdullahi and Umar Usman, were sentenced by Justice Nasiru Saminu of the Kano State High Court on Friday, following their arraignment on a one-count charge of impersonation.

According to the Kano Zonal Directorate of the EFCC, the duo paraded themselves as EFCC investigators in May 2025, using forged identity cards to deceive unsuspecting members of the public.

The charge read in part: “That you Buhari Abdullahi and Umar Mukhtar Usman, sometime in May 2025 at Kano within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, falsely impersonated to be investigators of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where you used a false identity card and paraded yourselves as staff of EFCC, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 132 of the Penal Code Law.”

Both defendants pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to them in court.

The prosecuting counsel, Idris I. Haruna, presented the facts of the case and urged the court to deliver judgment in accordance with their plea.

Justice Saminu subsequently convicted and sentenced them to six months imprisonment each, with an option of a fine of ₦50,000.

The anti-graft agency confirmed that the men were arrested while posing as its operatives. The EFCC warned the public to be cautious of fraudsters parading as officials of the commission.

The conviction adds to the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on impersonators tarnishing the image of the agency and exploiting citizens under false pretences.
