Court bars INEC from using MC Oluomo to distribute election materials

The request of the Labour Party (LP) to prevent the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from using Musliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, to distribute election materials in Lagos has been granted by Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court in Lagos.

The LP had sought the order, citing concerns over MC Oluomo’s alleged violent history and his reported links to a particular political party.

The court’s ruling has put a halt to INEC’s plans to engage MC Oluomo’s services in the distribution of election materials for the upcoming Lagos State local government election.

Justice Aneke, in his ruling, stated that the LP had provided sufficient evidence to support their claims, and there was a need to ensure the safety of voters and the integrity of the election process.

The judge said, “It is important for the electoral body to maintain neutrality in the election process and to avoid any actions that could cast doubts on the credibility of the election.”

The LP had argued that MC Oluomo’s involvement in the distribution of election materials would not only jeopardize the safety of voters but also create a perception of bias and compromise the integrity of the election.

Reacting to the ruling, the LP’s counsel, Bola Aidi, expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision, saying it was a victory for democracy and the rule of law.

He said, “We are pleased with the court’s ruling, which upholds the principles of democracy and the rule of law. This is a victory not only for the Labour Party but also for all Lagosians who believe in the sanctity of the electoral process.”

Meanwhile, INEC is yet to issue a statement on the ruling and its plans for the distribution of election materials in Lagos.
