In a significant move for the Congress of Nigeria Maritime Media Practitioners (CONMMEP), Chief Bestman Nze Jumbo, a key stakeholder in Lagos State and member of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s cabinet, has agreed to collaborate with the organization following productive discussions last weekend.
During an engaging interview, Chief Jumbo, who is also the President of Team Nigeria for Change and a prominent publisher, addressed pressing issues facing Lagos, particularly security challenges linked to the influx of people from various African nations. He emphasized the necessity for robust measures to ensure safety and security in the bustling megacity.
“Security challenges in Lagos are largely due to the unchecked influx of individuals from neighboring countries,” Jumbo stated. He acknowledged improvements in security under the current administration but noted that more could be done, especially regarding unemployment and community policing.
“While Lagos cannot protect other states, it can lead by example,” he said, advocating for collaboration among states to tackle common security challenges. He pointed out that initiatives like community policing have proven effective in reducing local crime, as residents are empowered to secure their neighborhoods.
The discussion also touched on inclusivity in governance. Jumbo praised Lagos for its diverse representation, stating, “Lagos is a model for inclusivity, where individuals from various ethnic backgrounds and political affiliations cooperate for the greater good.” He highlighted the importance of gender inclusivity, noting ongoing efforts by the government to empower women and involve different cultural groups in governance.
In addressing concerns about land grabbing, Jumbo outlined the measures taken by the Lagos State government, including the establishment of a dedicated anti-land grabbing agency. He urged citizens to verify land documents and report any fraudulent activities.
