CBN speaks on probing extortion allegation at Ecobank

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has denied claims that it is investigating Ecobank Nigeria and Ecobank Transnational Inc. Specialised Resolutions Company (ETISRC) for alleged extortion.

In response to a statement titled ‘Central Bank of Nigeria investigating allegations of extortion at Ecobank Nigeria,’ the CBN clarified that it is not conducting any probe into the financial institution.

The statement initially suggested that the CBN is looking into allegations regarding abusive practices and communications involving Wilben Trade Limited and its CEO, Marcus Wade.

However, reacting via a post on X on Wednesday, CBN denied the statement, adding that it is misleading. “This information is misleading and not affiliated with the Central Bank of Nigeria. Please be guided,” the apex bank said.

On March 4, 2023, it was reported in some sections of the media that Ecobank petitioned the Department of Public Prosecutions over $42,485,900 fraud allegations against Prem Garg, Devashish Garg, Marcus Wade and Wilben Trade Limited.
