Cameroonian rebels burn down houses in Cross River state, Nigeria

The paramount ruler of Belegete, HRM Uchua Amos, has disclosed that the mountainous community of Belegete in Obanliku LGA of Cross River State was invaded by Ambazonia rebels from South West Cameroon who fled after burning down houses.

The monarch said the Ambazonian rebels who infiltrated the Belegete community on December 5, abducted over 40 Cross River indigenes, killed the clan head, Chief Francis Okweshi, and occupied the place for two weeks.

Residents of the community who fled after the attack, are yet to return because the insurgents had destroyed their houses. The paramount ruler said he had reached out to the army and police commanders nearby, but the security agents were unable to access the community because of its very difficult topography.

Amos said;

“It takes over six hours from the famous Obudu Mountain Resort to get there. It is not motorable in any way. So, it was very difficult for our men to descend to the place to rescue our people”

The monarch also called for government presence in the Belegete community to deter incessant invasions of armed insurgents from Cameroon.
