Buhari To Award Anthony Joshua, Others With National Honours

President Muhammadu Buhari will award Nigerian-born British boxer, Anthony Joshua and 63 others with national honours at the Statehouse on Tuesday, October 11, 2022.

As one of the 64 Nigerians in that category out of the total of 437 people nominated for national honours, Joshua, whose ancestry can be traced to Sagamu, Ogun state, Nigeria, will receive the Officer of the Federal Republic (OFR) award.

The former two-time unified heavyweight world champion is rated as the third-best active heavyweight in the world as of October 2021 by BoxRec, and ranked as the seventh-best active boxer.

And ever since Anthony Joshua rose to fame in boxing, the former champion has lost just twice in his career as he prepares to take on Tyson Fury.

However, the contract for the fight has not been officially signed

Truetells Nigeria recalls that athletes who won medals at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, UK, and the World Athletics Championships in the USA earlier received various national honours from President Muhammadu Buhari.

Among them is the World record holder and champion Tobi Amusan, Ese Brume, Blessing Oborodudu, and Folashade Oluwafemiayo who were awarded the Officer of the Order of the Niger, OON.

In recognition of his accomplishments in the London 2012 Olympics, where he won gold in heavyweight boxing, Joshua was recognized by the United Kingdom as a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2013.
