In a country where women make up nearly half the population but still face huge social and economic hurdles, Nestlé Nigeria is flipping the script. Through bold, targeted initiatives, the company is turning the tide on women’s empowerment helping thousands of Nigerian women break free from poverty, gain financial independence, and lead change in their communities.
Despite progress, Nigerian women still battle deep-rooted challenges: limited access to education, scarce job opportunities, and cultural barriers that stifle entrepreneurship. The National Bureau of Statistics reports that female unemployment stands at 22%, while many women remain trapped in low-income, informal jobs.
Nestlé Nigeria refuses to accept this status quo.
At the heart of Nestlé’s women empowerment drive is the Nestlé Women in Business Program (NWIB) a powerhouse platform that offers skills training, mentorship, and financial support tailored specifically for women entrepreneurs. Since launching in 2020, NWIB has equipped over 15,000 women across Nigeria with practical business skills and access to micro-loans.
“Empowering women is not charity, it’s smart economics,” declares Wassim Elhusseini, CEO of Nestlé Nigeria. “When women succeed, families thrive, and communities blossom.”
Take the story of Mrs. Funke Adeyemi, a market trader from Ibadan. Once struggling to make ends meet, Funke joined NWIB’s entrepreneurship training and received a loan to expand her food processing business. Today, she employs 12 women and supplies Nestlé with locally sourced ingredients.
“It’s more than money it’s confidence, respect, and hope,” she says with a smile. “Nestlé believed in me when others didn’t.”
Nestlé’s efforts go beyond business support. The company actively promotes gender equality in its workforce, aiming for 50% female representation in management roles by 2026. It runs awareness campaigns tackling harmful stereotypes and partners with NGOs to address issues like domestic violence and unequal access to education.
Nestlé also drives community programs like Healthy Moms, Healthy Families, focusing on maternal health education and nutrition. This holistic approach ensures women are not only economically empowered but physically and mentally supported.
While challenges remain including cultural resistance and limited access to capital Nestlé Nigeria is doubling down. New programs targeting rural women, digital literacy training, and stronger partnerships with government agencies are all in the pipeline.
Nestlé Nigeria’s women empowerment initiatives are more than programs, they are movements that uplift voices, break cycles of poverty, and build resilient communities. By investing in women today, Nestlé is shaping a stronger, fairer Nigeria for tomorrow.
