Borno Deputy Governor, 100 Others Survive Max Air Engine Fire Disaster

Borno State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Umar Usman Kadafur, and over 100 passengers narrowly escaped tragedy on Wednesday when a Max Air aircraft suffered an engine fire shortly after takeoff from Maiduguri International Airport.

The incident occurred around 7 p.m. during a flight bound for Abuja. Approximately 10 minutes into the journey, the aircraft experienced engine failure caused by a bird strike, forcing the pilot to execute an emergency landing back at Maiduguri Airport.

A Max Air staff member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the details of the incident to Vanguard on Thursday.

The staff member said, “Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft struck a bird mid-air, which caused one of the engines to catch fire. The pilot acted swiftly to ensure the safety of all passengers.”

Passengers aboard the flight were reportedly in a state of panic following the emergency landing, with many opting to collect their belongings and return home rather than attempt another flight.

Despite the initial scare, Max Air management promptly arranged for another aircraft from Kano to transport passengers, including the Deputy Governor, safely to Abuja later that night.

The ill-fated aircraft remains grounded at Maiduguri International Airport, where it is undergoing extensive repairs.

Airport authorities commended the pilot and crew for their professionalism in averting disaster and reassured travelers of their commitment to safety.
