ASUU Extends Over 5 Months Rollover Strike

ASUU also accused President Muhammadu Buhari’s government of acting indifferent toward its demands.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) said it extended its ongoing industrial action by another four weeks to afford the government more time to address all of its demands.

ASUU also accused President Muhammadu Buhari’s government of acting indifferent toward its demands.

The university lecturers’ union started the strike on February 14 as a one-month strike. At its expiration, it was extended.
In May, the union again extended its strike by 12 weeks.

But according to a credible source, “The strike has been rolled over for another 4 weeks with effect from 12.01am (01/08/2022) to give the FGN more time to resolve the issues.”

Members of the union had embarked on a one-month strike on February 14 over the failure of the Nigerian Government to honour the various agreements reached with it.

ASUU’s demands include the release of revitalisation funds for universities, renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, release of earned allowances for university lecturers, and deployment of the UTAS payment platform for the payment of salaries and allowances of university lecturers.

Following the expiration of the initial twelve weeks rollover, the union had gone ahead to declare additional four weeks of industrial action, saying that it was giving the government more time to attend to its needs.
