The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has zoned the 2023 presidency to the Southern region.
Truetells Nigeria reports that Governor Nasir El-rufai of Kaduna State made this known on Tuesday in an interview with State House correspondents after a meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and APC governors.
According to the governor, the ruling party has also zoned its party National Chairmanship to the North, adding that the decisions were approved by the President.
The Kaduna governor stated that the President and the governors agreed on the zoning formula for all the six geopolitical zones ahead of the 2023 general elections.
He added that Northern zones will take positions that Southern zones had in the last eight years and vice versa, which is simple and equitable.
He said: “We have agreed on a zoning formula for all the six geopolitical zones and essentially, we swapped. Northern zones will take positions that Southern zones had in the last eight years and vice versa.”
“So, it’s a very simple, equitable and fair formula. We will now go back and consult at the zonal level, and look at the positions that are available and the process of the convention preparation will start in earnest. So by the grace of God on the 26th of March, we will have done a national convention.”
Speaking further, El-rufai denied reports that there was a division among the governors, admitting that there were disagreements over the party’s National Convention.
Present at the meeting between the President and the APC governor were Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF) Boss Mustapha and the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari.
