The All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, citing concerns over nonviable parties cluttering ballot papers.
APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, made the call during an interview with Arise Television on Friday, insisting that the ruling party is focused on ensuring compliance with the Nigerian constitution.
Basiru dismissed opposition claims of a creeping one-party state, noting that Nigeria currently has 19 registered political parties, though some lack electoral viability.
“We are calling on INEC to deregister the ADC. We don’t want the ballot papers to be clustered with unviable political parties,” Basiru said. “The APC is a party registered under Nigerian law, and we are bound to ensure all institutions comply with the law.”
He added, “When parties fail to meet the required electoral thresholds, they should be deregistered. The ADC has proven more noise than action, and INEC should exercise its power accordingly.”
Basiru described the ADC and its leadership as a “coalition of confusion,” reinforcing APC’s stance that only parties demonstrating genuine electoral capability should participate in national contests.
