The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has dismissed claims that he is planning to contest the Benue State governorship, following his recent exit from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Agbese, who represents Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency in Benue State, made this known in Abuja shortly after officially joining the Labour Party.
Explaining the reason for his defection, the lawmaker said the move was driven by his commitment to better serve his constituents and position himself for future political opportunities, particularly ahead of the 2027 elections.
He stressed that his decision was people-oriented, noting that his constituents believe the Labour Party provides a stronger platform to achieve their political goals.
According to him, the switch also reflects a change in political outlook, adding that it is important to move away from past approaches associated with the APC and embrace a fresh perspective.
Agbese, however, downplayed speculations linking his defection to a governorship ambition, stating that he currently has no such plan, although he did not entirely rule out the possibility in the future.
He also reaffirmed his loyalty to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, describing him as a mentor and major influence in his political career.
Agbese’s defection comes amid ongoing tensions within the APC in Benue State, largely fueled by the political disagreement between Governor Hyacinth Alia and Akume.
