Afeni Pledges Ongoing Battle Against Smugglers

The Acting Area Controller of Ogun 1 Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, Comptroller OO Afeni, has reaffirmed his commitment to a relentless campaign against smugglers and economic saboteurs. This statement came during a recent courtesy visit from the leadership of the Congress of Nigerian Maritime Media Practitioners (CONMMEP).

Comptroller Afeni highlighted his achievements since assuming office, revealing that his team has intercepted over 7,000 parcels of cannabis within just two months. He emphasized ongoing operations against smugglers in vulnerable areas, signaling an unwavering stance against illegal activities affecting the nation’s economy.

During the meeting, President of CONMMEP, Comrade Udo Onyeka, expressed confidence in Comptroller Afeni’s leadership and capabilities in combating economic sabotage. In response, Comptroller Afeni underscored the importance of collaboration between the Nigerian Customs Service and the maritime media, referencing the crucial role journalists play in fostering accountability through genuine reporting.

“The Nigeria Customs is committed to intelligence gathering and responding effectively to smuggling activities,” said Afeni. He mentioned ongoing efforts in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, including the development of educational and healthcare facilities in local communities, as part of his strategy to bolster community relations.

Afeni also reported skirmishes faced in January but assured continued success against smugglers, stating that over 6,000 additional parcels are yet to be processed. His determination is reflective of his proactive approach since taking office in December 2025.

Emphasizing transparency, Comptroller Afeni welcomed constructive criticism from the media and acknowledged their role as valuable allies in the fight against smuggling.

In closing, Alhaji Tunde Umar-Daniah, the former president of CONMMEP, expressed gratitude for Comptroller Afeni’s dedication to national service, affirming his belief in Afeni’s capability to exceed expectations in managing border security.

As Comptroller Afeni continues his mission, the Ogun 1 Command remains vigilant against the challenges posed by smugglers, aiming to safeguard the economic health of the nation.
