Wale Adenuga Speaks on Papa Ajasco’s ordeals

Veteran filmmaker and CEO of Wale Adenuga Productions, Wale Adenuga, has responded to claims made by Nollywood actor Abiodun Ayoyinka, widely known as Papa Ajasco, dismissing allegations of neglect and financial hardship.

Ayoyinka had recently sparked reactions after stating that he was struggling financially despite his long-standing role in the popular television series Papa Ajasco and Company. He also claimed he lacked the freedom to use the “Papa Ajasco” identity without approval.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Adenuga clarified that the actor has not been restricted from pursuing advertising or other professional opportunities. According to him, the only requirement is that Ayoyinka must obtain official clearance before using the “Papa Ajasco” brand, as part of efforts to safeguard its integrity.

Adenuga described Ayoyinka as a talented performer who closely resembles the original character created in 1976, adding that there has been no major conflict between them.

Providing further context, the filmmaker noted that Ayoyinka spent over 30 years in the Lagos State civil service and was a prominent member of the state’s cultural troupe before retiring. He added that the production team often sought official permission to feature him in filming during his years in service.

Addressing claims of neglect, Adenuga maintained that the company had supported the actor over time. He revealed that Ayoyinka had been gifted a car, similar to other cast members, and had also used multiple vehicles, including a Mercedes-Benz. He added that the actor is believed to own a house in Ogun State.

He stressed that restrictions on the use of the “Papa Ajasco” name are necessary to prevent misuse and protect the brand’s reputation, noting that cast members are free to engage in other projects outside the show.

Adenuga also questioned Ayoyinka’s claim of financial difficulty, asking what became of his earnings and retirement benefits from decades of service.

He further explained that actors involved in the production typically spend only a few weeks each year on set, leaving them with sufficient time to pursue other income-generating activities.

TRUETELLS Nigeria reports that the exchange has sparked debate among fans, with many weighing in on issues of actor welfare and intellectual property rights within the entertainment industry.
