At least 65 National Youth Service Corps members will be repeating their service year in various states for engaging in actions that contravened the bye-laws of the scheme in the country.

 

The announcement was made during the passing out parades that took place across the country on Thursday.

 

The offences committed by the sanctioned corps members include absconding from service, unauthorised journeys, and other miscellaneous offences that violated the laws of the scheme in Nigeria.

 

Speaking during the passing out parade in Abia State, the state Coordinator, NYSC, Jingi Denis, said nine of the 870 corps members of 2021 Batch A, Stream II, will repeat the service year for absconding from service.

 

According to him, the measure was in line with the NYSC rules and regulations.

 

Mr. Denis also noted that a corps member would be awarded by the state “in recognition of his outstanding performance during his stay in Abia State,” while five others would receive commendation certificates.

 

In Enugu State, the state Coordinator, Sam Ujogu, said 12 corps members who absconded from service will be remobilised to start service afresh whenever they resurfaced.

 

He made the statement during the passing out parade on Thursday, disclosing that 38 corps members, who participated in the 2021 Batch A, Stream II, NYSC, had their services extended.

 

Ujogu said he regretted that a corps member, Onuegbu Amarachi, with Batch EN/21A/1303, who was serving at Enugu North Local Government Secretariat, died on September 5, 2021.

It was also gathered that 14 of the 1, 260 corps members deployed to serve in Ondo State will repeat their service year, while the service year for 13 corps members was extended.

 

Addressing the corps members, Ani, who was represented by the Assistant Director of the corps, Adejoke Fashola, said the sanctions were subject to the approval of Directorate Headquarters, Abuja.

 

She said, “The scheme wields big stick against recalcitrant members of the service corps who fall short of expected behaviour and performance. Out of 1,260 due to pass out of service today, 13 corps members would have their service extended for various misdemeanours.

 

“14 corps members who absconded from service would have to repeat the service subject to the approval of Directorate Headquarters, Abuja.”

 

Also, the state coordinator in Ebonyi State, Bamai Dawuda, on Thursday, stated that 18 corps members will repeat their service year in the state.

The offenses committed by the sanctioned corps members include absconding from service, unauthorized journeys, and other miscellaneous offenses that violated the laws of the scheme in Nigeria.

Nine persons were sanctioned in Abia state, while five others received commendation certificates. 12 corps members who absconded from service will be remobilized in Enugu state to start service afresh whenever they reappear. Also, another 38 corps members who participated in the 2021 Batch A, Stream II, NYSC, had their services extended.

In Ondo state, 14 of the 1, 260 corps members will repeat their service year, while the service year for 13 corps members was extended.

Similarly, the state coordinator in Ebonyi State, Bamai Dawuda, on Thursday, stated that 18 corps members will repeat their service year in the state, while 20 corps members in Akwa Ibom will repeat the service for abscondment, and 30 of them who indulged in acts of misconduct ranging from absenteeism, unauthorized journeys among others, would have to face extended service from two weeks to four months.

NYSC loses 2 corps members in Kano as 12 repeat service year

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has said that two corps members lost their lives during the 2021/2022 service year in Kano State.

The NYSC State Coordinator, Hajiya Aisha Tata-Mohammed, made the disclosure during the Passing-Out-Parade of 1, 936 Batch “A” Stream II Corps members, on Thursday in kano.

She said that two corps members lost their lives during the service year while 12 others had their service year extended for violating rules and regulations.

Muhammad commended the state government and the people of the state for the moral support accorded to the corps members during their service to the state.

She, however, appealed to the state governor to resume payment of state government’s allowances to corps members serving in the state.

“The gesture if accomplished will go a long way in motivating the corps members to redouble their efforts towards serving their fatherland with diligence and enthusiasm,” she said.

While reitrating commitment to partner with the state government in all areas of need, the Coordinator called for the provision of accommodations to corps members posted to 44 local government areas of the state.

She urged the corps members to utilise the skills acquired during the service year and be good ambassadors of the country.

In his remarks, Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje, said the state had benefitted from the hard work and selfless service of the Corps members since the inception of the scheme.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, Ganduje said the corps members would be remembered by the good people of the state.

Earlier, Prof. Abdu Salihi, Chairman, NYSC Governing Board in the state, enjoined the corps members to strive hard to build upon the bond of unity established with the people of the state.

He advised the Corps members to utilise the skills acquired and become self-employed.
